Stability, stretch, surface and placement belong in the same decision.

Context photograph.
Begin where scratching already happens
Note the location and direction of the scratching you observe. Does the cat use a vertical edge or a horizontal surface? Is it near a resting spot or a route through the home? These observations help define what you need to compare without promising that a particular purchase will change behaviour.
Cats Protection advises sturdy scratching provision that allows an appropriate stretch. Use the exact product dimensions and assembly directions to judge the candidate. Do not rely on a lifestyle photograph where the scale is difficult to understand.
Record the complete setup
- List the usable scratching surface and its orientation.
- Check the base, attachment requirements and the manufacturer's stability instructions.
- Measure the intended position with room for approach and movement around it.
- Find care and replacement information for the scratching material.
- Decide how the setup will coexist with doors, drawers and the household walking route.
Separate attraction from pressure
Make the scratching option accessible in a relevant location and let the cat choose to investigate. Do not hold its paws against the surface to teach the action. Record voluntary use and the surrounding circumstances, then reconsider placement before assuming another product is necessary.
If the preferred location is inconvenient, write down why. A post immediately beside a doorway may obstruct people; one hidden behind a cabinet may be awkward for the cat. The buying decision is partly a room-layout decision, which is why the worksheet includes placement rather than only material.
Review after assembly
Follow the maker's assembly directions and check the completed item as instructed. Recheck fixings and worn surfaces during ordinary maintenance. Keep the instructions if parts can be replaced.
This guide does not certify a post's stability or rank brands. It helps you identify what to verify, what remains unknown and what you observe once the equipment is safely in place.
Sources & practical application
These principles inform the guide. Household worksheets, examples and sequencing are our editorial application, not reported experiments or endorsements by the source organisations.
Source principle: Prepare separate essentials, a hiding place and sturdy scratching facilities. Provide additional resources for multiple cats.
Source principle: Keep resources accessible and separate; place scratching options near relevant resting or scratching locations.
